If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination in Colombia with history, culture and natural beauty, then Filandia is the perfect place for you. This small town is located in the heart of the coffee triangle and is known for its lush green landscapes and breathtaking views. Filandia’s colonial architecture, charming streets, and welcoming locals make it a prime destination for tourists and locals alike. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Filandia and would recommend it as a must-see destination for photographers who are visiting Colombia.
Filandia
History
Filandia was founded in 1878 by Spanish colonizers who were attracted to the fertile land and mild climate of the area. The town was named after the Spanish province of La Rioja, which is where many of the colonizers of Filandia came from. In the early 20th century, Filandia became an important commercial center for the coffee industry. Coffee farming remains an important part of the local economy today. If you want to know more about why Colombian coffee is so special, take a look at this article we published in February of 2021 titled “Colombian Coffee“.
Geography
Filandia is located in the Quindio department, in the western region of Colombia. The town is situated on the eastern slope of the Andes mountains at an altitude of 6,380 feet (1,945 meters) above sea level. The surrounding area is characterized by rolling hills, fertile valleys and lush vegetation. The town’s location provides stunning panoramic views of the mountains and valleys below.
Tourism
One of the most popular tourist destinations in Filandia is the Mirador Colina Iluminada (Mirador de Filandia), a lookout point that offers stunning views of the town and surrounding landscape. The observation deck is located at the highest point in the town and can be reached by climbing a staircase that winds its way up the hillside. The view from the top is well worth the climb as you can see from the image above. Another must-see destination in Filandia is Plaza de Bolivar, the town’s central square. The Plaza is surrounded by colorful colonial buildings, including the historic church of Our Lady of the Rosary. It’s a great place to relax and take in the sights and sounds of the town. On weekends, you’ll often find live music and performances taking place in the square.
If you’re interested in learning more about the history of Filandia and surrounding area, a visit to the Museo del Oro Quimbaya is a must. The museum showcases art and artifacts of the Quimbaya culture, a pre-Colombian civilization that inhabited the area before the arrival of the Spanish. The museum’s collection includes gold jewelry, pottery, and other artifacts that provide a fascinating glimpse into the history of the region. For nature lovers, the Cocora Valley is a must-visit destination. The valley is located about 30 minutes from Filandia and is home to the iconic wax palm tree, the national tree of Colombia. The trees can grow up to 200 feet (60 meters) tall and are a breathtaking sight to behold. The valley also offers opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and bird watching.
